Mediator's Comments: My goal in family mediation is helping each member of that family get to where they consider that matters are normalized. At the mediation, my style combines legal information and a consideration of the law in a given area; concepts of how conflict develops; how conflict subsequently is transformed or resolved; and the principles of negotiation. The parties explore their short and long term needs and expectations, and where there are children, they consider the conflict through the eyes of their children. The goal is a productive and effective session that moves through the parties’ agenda. When the parties resolve their issues, I am willing to draft the agreement. Of the several hundred family mediations since 2005, many participants have had counsel present, or at the ready, and many have chosen to attend without a lawyer. In each instance, my goal is that the participants consider themselves respected, in the presence of someone who is neutral as to outcome and passionate as to process, and someone who provides them with a healthy environment where they consider how they can of move on.
