About Us   >   What We Do

The British Columbia Mediator Roster Society manages a list of qualified civil and family mediators. This list is called the "Civil Roster" and the "Family Roster". The mediators on these Rosters have, at a minimum, completed a basic level of training and experience and have agreed to follow the Society's code of conduct. By defining this basic level, the Society's Civil and Family Rosters provide a measure of protection to the public. At the same time, the Society provides guidance for civil and family mediators about acceptable levels of training and standards for ethical practice.

The Society is affiliated with British Columbia's Child Protection Mediation Program Roster, and in this capacity manages information about the mediators on this Roster.

The Society provides easy access to information about the mediators on the:

  1. Civil Roster
  2. Family Roster
  3. Child Protection Mediation Roster

Other services include:

  1. Help in Selecting a Mediator
  2. Appointing Under the Notice to Mediate Regulations (Supreme Court)
  3. Appointing Under Small Claims Rule 7.3 - Mediation for Claims Between $10,000 and $25,000
  4. Mediator Consultation Program
  5. Speakers' Bureau

The Society also provides information about mediation, including: information about the mediation process, conflict resolution organizations, mediation training opportunities, and mediation-related developments in British Columbia. For other mediation-related information, you can contact us.

While the CPMP Roster is affiliated with the B.C. Mediator Roster Society, the Society does not set standards for admission to this Roster. The Dispute Resolution Office, in collaboration with the Ministry of Children and Family Development, develops standards for training and experience which mediators must meet in order to be qualified for these mediation services. To become a member of the CPMP Roster, qualified mediators must successfully complete a selection process that is managed by the Dispute Resolution Office. Detailed information about CPMP mediator qualifications and the selection process is available on the Dispute Resolution Office web site at: www.ag.gov.bc.ca/dro/child-protection/index.htm

Help in Selecting a Mediator

If you and the other parties cannot agree on the selection of a mediator, the B.C. Mediator Roster Society can help with the selection process. There is no charge for the Society's services.

The Society does not set mediation fees; it is up to you and the other parties to agree with the mediator on a fee, and on who will pay the fee.

Appointing under the Notice to Mediate Regulations (Supreme Court)

The B.C. Mediator Roster Society plays an important role in selecting mediators under British Columbia's Notice to Mediate regulations. When parties are unable to agree upon the selection of a mediator under one of these regulations, any party may apply to a "roster organization" designated by the Attorney General for the appointment of a mediator. The Society has been designated as a "roster organization" for this purpose.

For more information about the Society's role as a "roster organization" under the Notice to Mediate regulations, including how to apply to the Society for the appointment of a mediator, visit the page called Appointment of Mediators Under Notice to Mediate Regulations (Supreme Court).

Appointing under Small Claims Rule 7.3 - Mediation for Claims Between $10,000 and $25,000

When parties are unable to agree upon the selection of a mediator under Rule 7.3 - Mediation for Claims Between $10 000 and $25 000, any party to the proceeding may apply to the British Columbia Mediator Roster Society for the appointment of a mediator.

For more information about the Society's role under Small Claims Rule 7.3, including how to apply to the Society for the appointment of a mediator, visit the page called Appointment of Mediators Under Small Claims Rule 7.3.

Mediator Consultation Program

As a public service the B.C. Mediator Roster Society operates a Mediator Consultation Program. The Program is designed to assist individuals who are seeking information about using mediation to resolve their disputes. Under the Program, some mediators on the Civil or Family Roster provide a consultation of up to 1/2 hour for a nominal fee of $10.

During the 1/2 hour consultation the mediator:

  • discusses the dispute with the individual
  • provides advice as to how suitable mediation would be for resolving the dispute
  • answers other questions, such as how much it would likely cost to mediate the dispute

After the 1/2 hour consultation the individual may retain the Civil or Family Roster mediator at his or her usual fees. There is no obligation to retain the mediator's services.

The Mediator Consultation Program is available to all British Columbians. To find out more, or to obtain the name of a Civil or Family Roster mediator who is participating in the program, contact us.

Speakers' Bureau

The B.C. Mediator Roster Society operates a Speakers' Bureau. Mediators from the Civil and Family Roster are available, free of charge, to speak to community, business, educational and professional groups. Please contact us if you would like a speaker for your organization.
